Long-haul flights with kids can feel intimidating. After a few trips with my own family, I realised something simple: preparation matters more than perfection.

Here’s what actually worked for us.

1. Surprise Activity Packs

Instead of giving everything at once, wrap small activities and hand them out every 30–45 minutes.

Ideas:

  • Sticker books
  • Small colouring pads
  • Puzzle books
  • Travel-sized board games

💡 Tip: Keep it lightweight and quiet.

2. Storytelling Games

One of our favourites is “One Sentence Story”.

Each person adds one sentence to build a silly story.
It costs nothing, but keeps them engaged longer than most apps.

3. Snack Strategy

Not just food – interactive snacks.

  • Trail mix to sort
  • DIY sandwich kits
  • Fruit pieces in small containers

Eating becomes part of the activity.

4. Window Challenges

If you have a window seat:

  • Count clouds
  • Spot other planes
  • Guess what country you’re flying over

It turns boredom into curiosity.

5. Low-Tech Travel Games

Some winners for us:

  • Magnetic travel chess
  • Uno
  • “I Spy”
  • Tic-tac-toe notebook

Quiet, compact, reusable.

What Didn’t Work for Us

Being honest here:

  • Bringing too many toys
  • Heavy books
  • Introducing brand-new complicated games mid-flight

Keep it simple.

Final Thoughts

Screens aren’t evil — but they don’t have to be the only option.

A little planning goes a long way in turning a stressful flight into a surprisingly calm one.

If you’re planning a family trip soon, I’ll also be sharing our full packing checklist next.
